Swindling Returns

Right now, my right wrist hurts a bit.

Not a lot, just a little bit.

When I put pressure on it – like the heel of my hand, force going down my upper arm, pushing my sadly excess weight onto it.

The Swindle is a really morish game. I keep wanting to play a little more. But it’s also easy to quit playing. It’s a game good at being frustrating and a game where the difficulty curve stays high. The early game threats don’t stop being threats – a single moment you’re spotted, the skills change. There’s no Not-Being-Spotted any more, no recovery, only a salvage.

This isn’t a bad thing. Super Meat Boy and Hotline Miami work on high-speed fail-and-retry systems. At the moment though, I’m not sure if The Swindle works for me, because holy crap do I go on tilt. I fail on one day, and then fail the next four or five days with tiny amounts of reward for it. It is a game building on momentum – and the early days’ momentum is the best and easiest to keep.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish the game, but, for all it’s maddening me – I do keep loading it up to play again.

And then I fail on one day.

And then the next four or five days-
