Thumbnail and outline below the fold!
Text
- It’s rough to be second best
- most indie devs would claim that people are always using a second-best game system in D&D
- but direct comparisons are hard
- Introduce the book basic outline who owns it
- Mophidius and Bethesda
- What’s covered in the book, interesting parts
- Good table of contents
- Run through the ToC
- character creation comes later than I like
- Why does that matter?
- Really good character sheet, simple
- Character building is extremely fiddly; while there are lots of broad elements, there are lots of refined categories
- The great big fat bear in the room
- the basic contrast between blades and this resolution mechanic
- the Dishonored resolution mechanic
- what you can use this book for
- The history and setting of Dunwall
- every single region of Dunwall is described excellently in game-agnostic terminology that’s more about the experience of living there and interacting with people there, the vibes, than there is anything
- the factions are described in terms of ideologies and causes; what you’re likely to believe, or how you behave as if you believe
- The characteristics of architecture are described and explained
- Ironically, race-class descriptors
- The ‘origin and class’ form of discrimination and a sidebar about a lack of racism and sexism
- Guides for playing during events, like the rat plague
- The language style of the places
- Beautiful maps
- These elements are described in terms of the human experience; why people do things, what they need, and how they care about them. This is excellent.
