~

This character is bothering me quite a bit of late. Particularly in how I use it personally. ~ means, when I read it, alternatively the extension of a syllable, an implied musicality to the voice, or a teasing flirtiness. Heck, almost anything sounds flirty when you append a ~.

What’s really getting in my head lately is whether or not it’s appropriate to use ~ in an actual manuscript. Should I write Aderyn as using ~s? Well, no, now, because I’ve already established her voice without them. At least I hope I have. Still! It’s a thought about the role of the ~, and when I won’t feel like an idiot using it.

  1. I always read it as ‘in a sing-song voice’, so it comes up when words are pronounced weird because they’re sung or sommat.

If I~ could save TI~me in a bottle~~~ etc etc

  2. I’ve always used it as a shorthand for ‘approximately’. I think that might be a very atypical usage though.
