Sailor Moon Revamps and Media Event Things

With news that a new Sailor Moon series is coming out, my twitter feed has become people I don’t think I know personally bubbling energetically about a series I don’t care about. This isn’t new; I can turn to my uni account to watch the same thing happen with Game of Thrones and a month or two ago I was seeing the same thing about Kill La Kill. A new game will hit the shelves and suddenly everything on twitter is about that, and that’s fine, but it’s with this sort of hegemony that startles me. Don’t get me wrong, the Sailor Moon revamp is particularly strange in my reaction to it. It’s a show about pretty young ladies full of lesbian subtext, surely I can at least enjoy it aesthetically? But there’s a part of me that’s just a bit get-off-my-lawny about it. You darn kids giving a shit about a cartoon that I didn’t think was that good, even though I did watch it, with yer nostalgias and yer subtexts and yer deeply held beliefs about homosexual erasure that are actually quite legitimate and I’ll just sit down. But it’s still just Sailor Moon. It’s just Sailor Moon.

I really worry if I’ve slowly been turned by a simple lack of engagement into a shitty old hermit hipster. Like because I don’t care about Game of Thrones or Kill La Kill or Watch_Dogs or Wolfenstein or Arrow or any of these media events that you gotta try I’m just some perpetually sour old dude sitting on the edge of this wellspring of enjoyable things my friends can partake of. Is it just the repeated theme of my life, these days, I’m bad at having fun? I don’t know.

There’s also a little dark note to it, which is I kinda wonder how many kids out there are going to feel like they’re being shoved aside because the Serena they knew is now Usagi and people around them are pretending the thing they liked never happened, just because they weren’t the sort of people who proactively sought out other forms of media? It feels a bit like a nerds thing, where there’s a right way to like an experience.

Basically, ‘something something something, GET HYPE.’
